Ebi, Falcons weakest link, says team’s ex-coach, others

Mansur Abdullahi, a former assistant coach of the Super Falcons, has expressed concern over the team’s defensive capabilities as they prepare for their Women’s World Cup Group B opener against Canada on Friday. According to The PUNCH, Abdullahi believes that the weakest link in the Falcons’ defence is Onome Ebi, who is 40 years old.

Abdullahi pointed out that the team has struggled to keep clean sheets in their last 12 games and expressed doubts about Ebi’s ability to contribute effectively at her age. He praised the team’s attacking talents, which include Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Gift Monday, but emphasized that the defence could be the team’s downfall at the World Cup.

Similarly, seasoned journalist Osasu Obayiuwana criticized the decision to include Ebi in the squad, questioning how a 40-year-old player who has not played club football for an entire season could be considered for the World Cup.

Godwin Izilien, a former Falcons coach, also expressed reservations about Ebi’s inclusion, suggesting that her performance no longer impacts the team positively. He believes that the team has other capable players who can perform well, emphasizing that the World Cup is a serious competition where the goal should be to win titles.
