Eagles drop to 40th in FIFA rankings

Despite their convincing victory in the last game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which was also their only match since the last FIFA world rankings update in June, Nigeria has dropped one place in the latest FIFA men’s rankings for June, as reported by PUNCH Sport Extra.

The Nigerian national team, known as the Super Eagles, was ranked 39th in the June rankings but lost three points and now stands at 40th place. The Super Eagles secured a dominant 6-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe in their final AFCON qualifier match. However, this result did not positively impact their FIFA ranking.

Despite the drop in the overall rankings, Nigeria maintains a strong position within Africa, ranking among the top six. This is advantageous as it ensures they will be among the top-seeded teams in the draw for the upcoming AFCON tournament scheduled to be held in Ivory Coast.

Morocco continues to hold the top spot among African nations, ranked 13th globally. Senegal, despite dropping two places to 20th in the world, retains its second position in Africa. Tunisia is the only African country in the top six on the continent to improve its global ranking, moving up from 31st to 29th in the world.

Algeria (34th) and Egypt (35th) complete the top five in Africa.

On the global scale, Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions, continues to occupy the number one spot in the FIFA rankings, followed by France, Brazil, England, and Belgium.
