Drivers in Lagos will face vehicle impoundment if their vehicles lack proper license plates.

The Lagos State Government has introduced a new law that will lead to the arrest of motorists driving vehicles with defective or missing registration number plates. Security agencies have been instructed to apprehend drivers who disregard this law.

Motorists who violate this regulation will face prosecution, as their actions contravene sections 15 and 16 of the State’s Transport Reform Law 2018. Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, announced this directive over the weekend.

Toriola emphasized that actions such as covering number plates without authorization, using faded or damaged number plates, misusing number plates, and driving without any number plate violate the law, especially considering the current security challenges in the country. According to section 16 of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, driving an unregistered vehicle or one without the proper identification mark is considered an offense.

He noted that vehicles without visible number plates could potentially be utilized for criminal activities that might be difficult to trace. Toriola further explained that number plates serve the dual purpose of accurate identification and security, as they are uniquely assigned to each vehicle.

Motorists were advised by Toriola to clean their number plates using water and non-chemical methods to prevent damage or fading. For individuals who are unwilling or unable to register their vehicles for various reasons, a Temporary Vehicle Tag (TVT) will be issued. Toriola clarified that such drivers should obtain the tag from the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) of the State, following the guidelines outlined in section 193 of the TSRL 2018. This interim measure can be pursued while awaiting a final decision on permanent registration.

Toriola conveyed that law enforcement agencies have been authorized to apprehend those who do not comply. He encouraged vehicle owners to adhere to the State Government’s regulations, thus contributing to the reinforcement of the existing security framework.
