Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, a leader and freedom fighter from the Niger Delta, commended President Bola Tinubu for reinstating the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, a move he had praised in a statement he personally endorsed.

Initially excluded from the list of ministries assigned to new ministers, the absence of the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs raised concerns among leaders and stakeholders in the Niger Delta, including Dokubo-Asari. However, President Tinubu recently redeployed Abubakar Momoh, an engineer, from the Ministry of Youth to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.

In his signed statement, Dokubo-Asari expressed gratitude and commended the President’s decision, acknowledging that among various attempts to address the Niger Delta’s concerns, the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs stands out as a direct effort. This ministry holds a pivotal role in coordinating and implementing programs and initiatives focused on fostering sustainable development, peace, and stability in the oil-rich region.

Dokubo-Asari emphasized the significance of the ministry to the development of the Niger Delta. He noted the historical struggles and agitation faced by the region, dating back to colonial times, and commended the efforts to address these issues over the years.

He highlighted the establishment of the Willink Commission in 1957, which recognized the Ijaw areas and Ogoni territories as special and endangered territories and people. Dokubo-Asari outlined various attempts, such as the Niger Delta Area Development Authority and the transformation of the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) into the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in 2000, that have been made to address the Niger Delta’s agitation.

In conclusion, the Ijaw-born freedom fighter called on President Tinubu to consider reverting the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) back to the OMPADEC nomenclature.
