President Bola Tinubu assured organized labor and Nigerians that the Port Harcourt refinery will be operational by December 2023. He disclosed this during a meeting with labor union leaders at the State House in Abuja on August 2, 2023.
Representatives of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NCL) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), including Comrade Joe Ajaero and Comrade Festus Usifo, met with President Tinubu earlier that day to address the nationwide protest by workers.
According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, Dele Alake, Tinubu promised the organized labor that the Port Harcourt refinery would begin production by the end of the year. He mentioned that the refinery’s operations would commence after the completion of the ongoing rehabilitation contract between NNPCL and Italian firm, Maire Tecnimont SpA.
The organized labor confirmed Tinubu’s promise and expressed their gratitude to Nigerians for supporting the nationwide protest. They reported that the engagement with the President was fruitful, and significant progress was made on the issues concerning the Presidential Committee on Subsidy removal, which led to the protest.
