“Chicago State University in the United States has complied with the order of a United States District Court in the Northern District of Illinois by providing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar with President Bola Tinubu’s academic records. A U.S. district judge dismissed President Tinubu’s objections and fully endorsed the release of these records.
The judge granted Mr. Atiku’s application, setting an expedited schedule for discovery in light of the impending October 5, 2023, deadline for the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Chicago State University (CSU) is directed to produce all relevant and non-privileged documents in response to the discovery requests, including the Rule 30(b)(6) deposition of CSU’s corporate designee, to be completed by 5:00 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.
In the CSU documents, which became widely known late Monday night, the university addressed Atiku’s four requests. When Atiku requested a “true and correct copy of any diploma issued by CSU in 1979 to Mr. Tinubu,” the U.S. university explained that they do not typically retain copies of student diplomas and could not locate the original diploma prepared for Mr. Tinubu in 1979, thus having no responsive documents.
Atiku intends to use these CSU academic records in his appeal at the Supreme Court as he challenges Tinubu’s victory in the presidential election held on February 25. However, Tinubu’s legal team contends that these documents hold no relevance for the Supreme Court proceedings.”
