Six football clubs hailing from nations in West Africa have arrived in Benin City to participate in the 2023 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Champions League qualifiers.
The participating clubs are as follows: Delta Queens FC of Nigeria, Athletic FC D’Abidjan of Cote d’Ivoire, and US Forces Armees of Burkina Faso. Additionally, Ampea Darkoa of Ghana, Sam Nelly of Benin Republic, and Friends of the World FC of Togo are also in attendance.
However, AS Garde Nationale from Niger Republic is absent due to the country’s recent coup, which has necessitated a reorganization of the initial draw for the WAFU-B zone qualifiers.
Following the revised draw that took place on Friday, Delta Queens have been placed in group A alongside Sam Nelly and US Forces Armees. Group B consists of Athletico FC D’Abidjan, Ampea Darkoa, and Friends of the World FC of Togo.
Set to span two weeks, the qualifiers are scheduled to commence on August 20th at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.
Bailly Sergei, the WAFU-B Director of Competition, addressed the media and noted that the new draw aligns with CAF’s requirement of having three teams in each group. He mentioned that the qualifiers’ initial draws were conducted in Morocco before the withdrawal of the Nigerien side.
