Delta Queens FC from Asaba achieved a commanding 3-0 victory against U.S. Forces Armees of Burkina Faso during the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers for WAFU Zone B on Sunday.
The Nigerian representatives launched an impressive performance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. Nigeria is hosting six West African clubs for this qualifying series, which aims to determine the representative for the next stage of the competition.
In the early stages of the match, in the fifth minute, Folajimi Olabiyi of Delta Queens scored the opening goal, setting the stage for potential further goals from the Nigerian team. Despite the Burkina Faso team’s resilience, they managed to thwart Delta Queens’ attempts to increase their lead throughout the first half.
The second half saw Delta Queens elevate their performance, even after Vera Samuel received a red card in the 59th minute for fouling Paligwende Kietega of USFA. Just three minutes later, Chinaza Agoh, recognized as the match’s most valuable player, teamed up with Mercy Omokwo to extend the lead for Delta Queens, despite being a player down.
In the 78th minute, Omokwo secured the third goal, sealing the Nigerian club’s victory with a maximum three points and positioning them at the top of group A.
Following the match, Coach Tosan Blankson of Delta Queens expressed confidence in his team’s capability to secure the sole ticket available in the group.
