‘Boniface a bit like Lewandowski’

Since making his move to Bayer Leverkusen from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in a €20 million deal this summer, Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has drawn comparisons to Bayern Munich legend Robert Lewandowski, following his two appearances in the Bundesliga.

Boniface has kicked off his career with Bayer Leverkusen in impressive fashion, recording three goals and one assist in his first three competitive matches.

In a recent Rhine derby against Borussia Monchengladbach at Borussia Park, the 22-year-old showcased his prowess by scoring two goals, contributing to Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-0 victory.

Boniface previously demonstrated his potential at an elite level during the Europa League last season. He delivered two goals and two assists across four matches against Union Berlin in the group stage and round of 16, even finding the net against his current team in the quarter-finals.

His exceptional performance made him a joint-top scorer alongside Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League campaign, tallying six goals in 10 games. This accomplishment led to his €20 million transfer from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to Germany.

Following his arrival at Bayer during the summer, he promptly scored his debut goal in the DFB Cup against Leipzig. He also notched his first Bundesliga assist and secured a double on his second outing in the German top-flight.

The Bundesliga’s official website highlighted the resemblances between Boniface and the league’s second-highest all-time scorer, Robert Lewandowski, stating:

“While comparing a newcomer in the Bundesliga to one of the league’s all-time greats might seem a bit premature, allow us to explain. Boniface is a versatile center forward with proficiency on both feet, notable physical strength, good aerial ability, and surprisingly adept dribbling skills. His intelligent positioning and capability to elude defenders are also qualities he shares with the legendary figure of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.”
