Blackface, a member of the renowned Afrobeats group Plantainshun Boiz, remains in the spotlight, even years after stepping away from the music scene due to his allegations of copyright infringement by various artists. In his latest claim, Blackface asserted during an interview with Naija FM that Asake, the current rave of the moment, copied his song ‘Ikebe Supper’ for Asake’s popular single ‘Joha’, featured on his debut album ‘Joha’ released in 2022.
Expressing his dismay, Blackface expressed his hurt over the continued unauthorized use of his songs by Afrobeats stars, comparing his art to his own child and criticizing the unauthorized usage.
When asked why he used the name of the group Plantainshun Boiz instead of his own name in songwriting credits, Blackface explained that he wanted the group to present a unified front and didn’t want any member to feel left out or unappreciated.
Blackface has also claimed ownership of the mega-hit song ‘African Queen’, originally performed by his former Plantainshun Boiz bandmate, 2baba.
Regarding the question of whether Asake copied Blackface’s ‘Ikebe Supper’ for ‘Joha’, the claim is based on the usage of the line “Ikebe Supper” by Asake in his song. However, it is important to note that the two records do not share similar chord progressions, beat patterns, or melodies. Furthermore, it should be noted that ‘Joha’ was initially recorded around 2014 when Asake was still a student at Obafemi Awolowo University, and the version released in 2022 is a remake of the earlier rendition.
