Benue Women Block Makurdi-Abuja Highway To Protest Against Killing Of 5 People By Armed Men Suspected To Be Herders

In Benue State, hundreds of women and youths took to the Makurdi-Lafia-Abuja highway on Friday, setting up a roadblock to protest the recent killing of five individuals in two villages within the Guma Local Government Area. The attackers, suspected to be herders, were responsible for these deadly incidents.

Reports indicate that this highway blockade caused significant disruptions for travelers seeking entry to or exit from Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.

The protest emerged in response to the tragic events in Ngban and Nyian villages, where armed men believed to be herders attacked, resulting in the deaths of three people on Thursday night in Ngban, and two more individuals in Nyian on Friday morning.

Local residents expressed distress, especially considering that Ngban had previously experienced a similar attack earlier in the year, leading to the deaths of over 30 people, including internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Christopher Waku, the Guma LGA Security Adviser, confirmed the fatalities and the ensuing protest, stating, “Since 5 am today (Friday), our women have gathered on the Makurdi-Abuja federal highway, as you can hear in the background. The women are protesting the murder of five people killed yesterday (Thursday) night and this morning (Friday).”

The women have resolved to remain on the road until the governor addresses them. Waku added, “The women have insisted that they will not leave the road until the governor arrives and speaks to them. I’m currently at the protest site on the road, awaiting Governor Hyacinth Alia.”

The incident underscores the growing concerns over security and ongoing violence in the region.
