“Bandits have launched an attack on a secondary school located in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, resulting in the tragic deaths of two teachers.

The victims were identified as a recently-married couple who were educators at the BECO Comprehensive Secondary School in the Kwi community within the local government. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon while the teachers were in the midst of a meeting to compile student results for the upcoming ‘Speech and Prize-giving Day’ scheduled for Friday.

According to eyewitnesses, the bandits arrived on the school premises around 3 pm accompanied by their cattle, disrupting the staff meeting. After the teachers requested that the Fulani herders remove their cows from the school grounds, the situation escalated as the armed individuals refused to comply. Instead, they drew their weapons and opened fire on the teachers, leading to the deaths of two educators and injuries sustained by others, including the Vice Principal of the school.

Moses Gwott, a youth leader in the community, confirmed the killings, recounting the incident to The PUNCH. Additionally, Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulders Association, issued a statement condemning the attack and calling for a ban on open grazing to prevent further incidents.

He stated, “The Berom Youths Moulder-Association is once again saddened by the invasion of BECO Comprehensive School, Kwi, where two staff members, Mr. and Mrs. Rwang Danladi, were reportedly shot dead… The recently-married couple, Rwang Danladi and his wife, Mrs. Sandra Rwang Danladi, were both victims of this tragedy. Mr. Dalyop Emmanuel Ibrahim, the Vice Principal of the institution, sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical attention at the Jos University Teaching Hospital.”

The association expressed concern about the unrestricted movement of armed individuals and cattle in nearby communities. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Alfred Alabo, could not be reached for comment on the matter.”
