Midfielder Rivio Ayemwenre has expressed his delight at scoring Sporting Lagos’ very first goal in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as they clinched a 2-0 victory over Gombe United in their inaugural NPFL match on Monday, according to a report from PUNCH Sports Extra.

The newly promoted team initiated their top-tier league campaign with a triumph at a packed Onikan stadium. The match lived up to expectations, drawing a large crowd of fans eager to witness the return of top-level football to Lagos, following MFM FC’s relegation in 2022.

In the 43rd minute of the game, Ayemwenre’s persistent efforts to secure the lead for his team paid off when he connected with a cross from his teammate, Jonathan Alukwu, and headed home the historic goal, putting them ahead before the first half concluded.

In the 85th minute, substitute Clement Nantuam extended the lead by sending a low shot into the net following a rebound from Junior Lokosa’s acrobatic attempt.

Speaking to a correspondent after the match, Ayemwenre couldn’t contain his emotions and said, “That goal was incredible for me. I felt so much joy when I scored; it was truly unbelievable. I knew the ball was going to come to me because it’s something we’ve practiced many times, and once the cross came and I headed it in, I felt extremely excited, and even my teammates couldn’t hold me back.”

Regarding their goals for the season, he assured the fans that they would do their utmost to contend for the league title. Ayemwenre stated, “We will try to win the title. We’ll give it our best effort and work hard, taking it one game at a time.”

Sporting Lagos faces a challenging match on matchday two against Akwa United on Sunday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
