Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay get automatic 2030 World Cup spot

FIFA has officially confirmed that Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay will each receive automatic qualification spots for the 2030 World Cup due to their roles in hosting the three opening games of the tournament. While FIFA had initially announced that Morocco, Portugal, and Spain would jointly host the 2030 World Cup, with automatic qualification for those nations, it has now been clarified that the three South American nations will also be exempt from the qualifying process.

This means that in the 2030 tournament, which will already expand from 32 teams to 48 teams compared to the 2026 finals, “three of the six places” designated for the South American zone will be allocated to these host nations, according to a FIFA spokesperson. Additionally, a South American team will have the opportunity to qualify through a playoff against a team from another continent.

This guaranteed qualification spot for 2030 is particularly significant for Paraguay, as the nation has not qualified for the last three World Cup tournaments. Initially, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, along with Chile, were candidates to host the tournament. However, they ultimately withdrew their bids in exchange for the privilege of hosting the first three matches and commemorating the centenary of the World Cup, which was inaugurated in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, in 1930.
