Residents living in and around Osumoghu community in the Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State are currently gripped by fear due to the Nigerian Air Force airstrikes.

Some residents expressed their concerns on Thursday, stating that many people were leaving their homes out of fear of potential reprisal attacks by the hoodlums who were being dislodged from the forests surrounding their communities.

The Nigerian Air Force had announced that it conducted airstrikes on camps and armories of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Mother Valley Orsumoghu, Anambra State, and Aku Ihube, Imo State, following credible intelligence reports of planned attacks by suspected IPOB fighters.

However, IPOB, through its spokesman, Emma Powerful, disputed the NAF’s claims, asserting that they had no camps in those locations and accused the military of bombing innocent civilians in those communities.

During a visit to Osumoghu community, palpable tension was evident as major roads appeared deserted, and many shops and markets remained closed. Some residents, like an octogenarian named Nnanna Offor, shared their reasons for leaving, citing fears of potential attacks by the dislodged individuals.

Madam Esther Nkwo, a retired teacher, expressed similar concerns about the safety of the community’s youth, many of whom had fled due to fears of being falsely labeled as IPOB members and taken away by security forces.

Efforts to contact the Transitional Chairman of the Nnewi South LGA for comments were unsuccessful. However, an official from the council secretariat, Chidiebere Nwosu, reassured residents that the airstrikes were targeted at hoodlums disturbing the peace of the community and urged residents not to panic.
