Amusan relishes historic Diamond League win

Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, has expressed her deep connection to the track in Eugene, Oregon, which she now considers her own. She recently concluded her season on a remarkable note by securing the Wanda Diamond League title for the third consecutive year, achieving another significant milestone on this cherished track.

The 26-year-old Nigerian faced fierce competition in the 100m hurdles event at the Oregon Diamond League, including Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Kendra Harrison, Danielle Williams, Nia Ali, Tia Jones, and Megan Tapper. However, Amusan started strongly and maintained her lead throughout the race. She cleared the final hurdle and finished with an impressive season-best time of 12.33 seconds. Camacho-Quinn from Puerto Rico closely followed in second place with a time of 12.38 seconds, while the USA’s Harrison secured third place with 12.44 seconds.

This remarkable victory marked Amusan’s third consecutive Diamond League title, making her only the second woman in Diamond League history to achieve a hat-trick of 100m hurdles titles. Importantly, she accomplished this feat on the very same track in Oregon where she had won the World Championship the previous year and set the current world record of 12.12 seconds.

After her victory, Amusan expressed her elation, saying, “I came out here and said it’s my race to lose, and I will give my all. I said it’s 200 or nothing because, 100 per cent, I am not winning today (Sunday). So, I came out here, and I told God to give me the strength. I said this (racing in Eugene) is God’s track. I came here, I’m like ‘This is my track; I’m going to dominate’ and God did just that.”

Amusan expressed her gratitude to God and dedicated her win to her coach, family, fans, and everyone who supported her throughout the challenging year. She emphasized that the victory was not just about her but also about the collective effort of her support system.

The record-setting victory marked a glorious conclusion to Amusan’s season, which had its share of disappointments after her inability to defend her world title at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in August.
