Amusan and Nathaniel secure their spots in the Paris Olympics.

Former World 100m hurdles champion, Tobi Amusan, and 400m hurdler, Ezekiel Nathaniel, have secured their spots in the upcoming Paris Olympics in France.

In December, World Athletics outlined the qualification process for the Paris 2024 Olympics, including the performance standards athletes needed to meet between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024.

Tobi Amusan made history as the first Nigerian athlete to secure her spot at the Games. She achieved this milestone at the BAUHAUS-Galan Diamond League event in Stockholm, Sweden, on July 2, where she posted an impressive time of 12.52 seconds in the 100m hurdles race at the Olympiastadion. Since then, she has further improved her performance, recording a personal season’s best of 12.34 seconds at the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial Diamond League event in Chorzów, Poland, on July 16.

Ezekiel Nathaniel, Nigeria’s 400m hurdles record holder with a time of 48.42 seconds, earned his ticket to his first-ever Olympics by participating in the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The 20-year-old clocked a time of 48.47 seconds, surpassing the entry standard of 48.70 seconds.

On another note, long jumper Ese Brume came very close to securing her place in the Paris Olympics during the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, missing the required mark of 6.86 meters by just two centimeters with a jump of 6.84 meters, which placed her fourth in the final. However, she still has an opportunity to meet the qualifying mark at the Diamond League final in Oregon, USA, scheduled for September 16-17. Ese Brume has previously competed in two Olympic Games, finishing fifth in her debut in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and earning a third-place finish five years later in Tokyo, Japan.
