American Super Falcons:”Four American players proudly representing Nigeria as part of the Super Falcons at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.”

“The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will see the Super Falcons benefit from a infusion of American-born talent. This tournament marks a historic moment as 32 teams compete for the first time, and it’s also the inaugural occasion of two countries co-hosting the event.

Many athletes who hold dual citizenship proudly display the flags of the cultures they identify with, and some outstanding individuals may choose to represent a country other than the United States on the international stage. However, making it to the World Cup as part of a national team requires exceptional skill and talent.

Four Americans have qualified to represent Nigeria in the upcoming Women’s World Cup, based on FIFA regulations stating that if their biological mother or father was born in the relevant association’s territory, they are eligible. Let’s take a look at these four players who will proudly wear the Nigerian colors:

1. Michelle Alozie:

Born in California, Michelle’s parents hail from Nigeria’s Imo State. While playing amateur soccer for Yale during her college years, Alozie now shines as a key player for the Houston Dash in the United States.

2. Ifeoma Onumonu:

Originally from California, Ifeoma represented the USA in youth and U23 football before playing collegiate soccer at the University of California. In 2021, she received her first call-up to the Nigerian team and currently plays for Gotham FC, representing New York/New Jersey.

3. Toni Payne:

Since earning her Duke degree in 2017, Toni has enjoyed a successful professional career abroad. Now, she will represent Nigeria at the World Cup while playing for Sevilla in the Spanish Primera División de la Liga de Fútbol Femenino.

4. Yewande Balogun:

Yewande, a coach at Sacramento United and assistant coach at UC Davis, will also represent Nigeria in the World Cup. As a goalkeeper, she plays professionally for French Division 2 Féminine club AS Saint-Étienne.

Together, Payne, Alozie, Balogun, and Onumonu will proudly represent the Super Falcons of Nigeria as they face Canada in their opening match on Friday, July 21, 2023.”
