AFCON Qualifier: Nigeria eye top spot in final group game

  • Post category:Sports

Nigeria and Sao Tome & Principe will bring Group A of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers to a close when they face off at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Sunday.

In the previous encounter last year, the Super Eagles secured a resounding 10-0 victory at the Stade Adrar and will be seeking a similar result in front of their home fans.

Nigeria secured their place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on June 18 with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex. Despite falling behind 2-0 due to a brace by Victor Osimhen, Nigeria managed to stage a comeback, with goals from Mustapha Bundu and Augustus Kargbo. Ultimately, Kelechi Iheanacho’s 95th-minute strike secured the win for the Super Eagles.

Before that, Nigeria ended a five-match losing streak across all competitions by defeating Guinea-Bissau 1-0 on March 27, thanks to a first-half penalty from Moses Simon.

The Super Eagles have won four of their five qualifiers, with their only loss being a 1-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau on March 24. They are currently leading Group A with a seven-point advantage over third-placed Sierra Leone.

On the other hand, Sao Tome & Principe’s quest for their maiden Africa Cup of Nations appearance has not been successful, as they sit at the bottom of the table. They have lost four out of five games in Group A, with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Sierra Leone on March 22 being the only exception.

Their struggles can be attributed to their weak defense, as they have conceded a staggering 20 goals in five matches during the qualifiers. Sao Tome & Principe have not won a game in their last 17 consecutive matches across all competitions, with 16 losses and one draw since their 2-1 victory over Libya in the AFCON qualifiers in March 2016.

Nigeria has named a 23-man squad for the upcoming match, featuring key players like Osimhen, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, and captain William Troost-Ekong. Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been in fine form in the Premier League, also earned a spot in the squad, while Ahmed Musa, the nation’s most-capped player, has been left out. The squad also includes newcomers such as center-back Jordan Torunarigha and attacking duo Victor Boniface and Gift Orban, who could make their debuts.

Meanwhile, Sao Tome & Principe has selected a 21-man squad for the clash against Nigeria, featuring goalkeeper Pedro Mateus, midfielder Denilson Silva, and veteran striker Luis Leal, the nation’s all-time leading scorer. Leal is expected to lead the attack alongside Ebanilson Viegas and Marcos Barbeiro.
