Nigerian female freestyle wrestler, Odunayo Adekuoroye, has secured her spot for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by winning the bronze medal in the women’s 57kg category at the ongoing World Championships in Belgrade. She defeated her Turkish opponent, Elvira Kamaloglu, with a score of 9-5 to become the first Nigerian grappler to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

This will be Adekuoroye’s third appearance at the Olympics, and she is determined to win a medal after experiencing disappointments in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Despite a loss in the quarter-finals to world No.1 Sarita Mor from India, she fought her way through the repechage to secure the bronze medal and the coveted Olympic spot.

In addition, Blessing Oborududu, an 11-time African champion and silver medallist at Tokyo 2020, narrowly lost in the women’s 68kg quarter-finals to Vusala Parfianovich. Esther Kolawole also faced a tough challenge and lost 7-1 to world No. 8, Grace Bullen of Norway, in the quarter-finals of the women’s 62kg event. However, both Oborududu and Kolawole still have a chance to qualify for the Olympics through the repechage if their conquerors advance to the final of their respective weight categories.
