At Least 74 Nigerians Killed By Hoodlums During 2023 General Elections – European Union Report

The European Union (EU) has released a report titled “Election Observation Mission NIGERIA 2023,” stating that 74 fatalities occurred in 101 violent incidents during the election period in Nigeria. According to the report obtained by SaharaReporters, the EU noted that these incidents occurred primarily during the campaign phase, and the intensity of violence escalated as the election approached.

The report highlighted that the violence had a detrimental impact on the electoral process, impeding the essential elements of the election and suppressing active voter participation. The EU EOM observed that assassination attempts and killings increased closer to the polls, creating an atmosphere of insecurity, particularly in the southern states. Additionally, they observed systematic attacks by political thugs on rallies and opponents in several northern states. The use of violence disrupted the campaign, hampered the electoral process, and reduced voter engagement.

The report also addressed issues of campaign finance, stating that despite comprehensive regulations, campaign finance laws appeared largely ineffective. The EU EOM received reports and witnessed widespread distribution of goods and vote-buying. While some state agencies attempted to address corrupt practices, the results were modest. This indicates the need for political will, enhanced institutional capacity, and robust enforcement synergy to ensure transparency and genuine accountability.

One of the victims of electoral violence mentioned in the report was Samuel Arunsi Eze, who was allegedly beheaded by a political thug known as Daniel Mgba in the Ndi Agwu community of Abam, Arochukwu Local Government Area in Abia State, South-East Nigeria.

In a related report, the Kimpact Development Initiative, a non-governmental organization working to promote good governance and democratic rights, stated that Nigeria recorded 339 incidents of election violence in 2022, resulting in the loss of 165 lives.
