T’tennis: 80 players for Dala Hard Court tourney

According to a report from PUNCH Sports Extra, the 2023 Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship is scheduled to take place in Kano from November 10 to 18. The President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Ifedayo Akindoju, has indicated that more than 80 players are anticipated to participate in the 36th edition of the tournament.

Akindoju has emphasized that the federation will collaborate with other stakeholders to elevate the status of tennis and position Nigeria appropriately within the sport. He also noted that the championship has historically served as a platform to showcase many Nigerian players’ talents.

“It’s another tournament aimed at giving our players exposure and keeping them in good form for upcoming competitions, and undoubtedly, it has contributed significantly to the development of tennis in Nigeria,” Akindoju stated.

At the previous edition of the tournament, top seeds Uche Oparaoji and Marylove Edwards emerged as champions in the male singles and female singles categories. Oparaoji secured the male singles title by defeating David Ekpenyong with a score of 6-0, 1-6, 7-6, earning a cash prize of N1 million. Ekpenyong received N500,000 for his second-place finish. Edwards retained her title and won the N500,000 cash prize by defeating Oiza Yakubu with a score of 6-2, 6-0, while Yakubu received N300,000 as the runner-up.

In the men’s doubles category, the duo of Mohammed Musa and Shehu Lawal triumphed over Lawal Peter and Timibra Godsgift in the final match with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 10-8, claiming the N600,000 cash prize. These players, along with others, are expected to participate in the upcoming tournament.
