How Eagles can end 15 games winless streak

As Nigeria heads into today’s match against Mozambique, having gone winless in their last 15 friendly games, Punch Sports Extra explores what needs to be done to break the streak:

1. Moffi and Boniface Partnership:

With Victor Osimhen sidelined due to injury, fans will be looking for more from the partnership of Victor Boniface and Terem Moffi. In the previous match, the two forwards combined effectively after Osimhen was substituted, and the team’s attack improved with both of them on the field. Starting both forwards against Mozambique could challenge the Mambas’ defense and provide Nigeria with the goals required to end the 15-game winless streak in friendlies.

2. Give Dele-Bashiru a Start:

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru is known for his speed and effectiveness in one-on-one situations. Although he hasn’t played for Nigeria yet, he is eager to make an impact if given the opportunity. The 22-year-old has been in excellent form for his Turkish club, scoring four goals and providing two assists in seven matches. Coach Jose Peseiro should consider starting him alongside Alex Iwobi in midfield to add creativity to the team. His presence can free up Iwobi to advance further up the pitch, adding more dynamism to the team, which has been lacking for a while, especially with Joe Aribo not performing at his best.

3. Convert Chances:

Nigeria failed to capitalize on some of the opportunities they created in the match against Saudi Arabia, with Ademola Lookman being a major culprit. They were subsequently punished for their inefficiency. To have a chance of ending their 15-game winless streak in friendly matches, Peseiro’s team must ensure they score and convert their chances effectively.

4. Avoid Goalkeeper Blunders:

Nigeria’s struggle to keep clean sheets in most of their games has been well-documented, with Francis Uzoho’s recent mistake against Saudi Arabia being the latest in a series of errors. In every game, a team’s chances of winning are enhanced by not conceding goals. This is something the Eagles must prioritize in today’s match.
