Barboza completes comeback, outlasts Yusuff in UFC clash

Sodiq Yusuff, the Nigerian fighter, had a dominant first round against Edson Barboza in their featherweight main event in Las Vegas on Saturday. Unfortunately for Yusuff, the fight wasn’t limited to just one round.

Barboza (24-11) managed to survive the challenging first round and went on to secure a unanimous decision victory at UFC Fight Night. All three judges scored the fight in favor of Barboza, with scores of 49-46, 48-46, and 48-46.

In the opening round, Yusuff, aged 30, inflicted significant damage on Barboza with his punches to the extent that it appeared the experienced fighter was on the verge of being knocked out. However, Barboza made a remarkable recovery and controlled the majority of the remaining 20 minutes.

Barboza, a 12-year UFC veteran, came close to delivering a spectacular knockout in the third round when he dropped Yusuff with his signature spinning wheel kick. Yusuff displayed his own resilience in that moment, but he didn’t appear the same afterward.

Barboza, aged 37, expressed, “I really felt it,” regarding Yusuff’s early onslaught. “I didn’t know if I was in the gym or at home playing with my kids. I said, ‘What the f— is going on.’ Thank God, I listened to my coaches, had a good recovery, and came back stronger.”

According to UFC Stats, both featherweights landed nearly the same number of total strikes: Barboza with 208 and Yusuff with 207. However, Barboza’s strikes were evidently more powerful, and he effectively targeted both the body and head.

Yusuff (13-3) has only suffered two losses since joining the UFC in 2018. He entered Saturday’s fight following a one-year hiatus, not having competed since October 2022.
