Eagles seek end to poor friendly run

Nigeria will be aiming to break their streak of 15 consecutive winless matches in friendly games when they face Mozambique at the Estadio Municipal de Albufeira on Monday. Both teams have secured their spots in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and are preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The last time these two teams met was in January 2014, when Nigeria emerged victorious with a 4-2 scoreline in the Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria’s recent form in friendlies has been poor, with five losses and one draw in their last six matches. Mozambique, on the other hand, has recorded three wins and three losses in their most recent friendly encounters.

In their first game during the international break, Nigeria played to a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia’s Green Falcons. This extended their winless streak in friendly matches to 15, with nine losses and six draws since their last friendly victory in March 2019 against Egypt.

Mozambique, in contrast, has been unbeaten in six of their last seven matches in all competitions, with three wins and three draws. Their only defeat came in the COSAFA Cup against Lesotho on July 10.

The history between these two teams includes a goalless draw in March 2009, as well as Nigeria’s 1-0 victory in October 2009 and a 3-0 win at the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, where Nigeria secured a place in the tournament’s quarter-finals. In the first encounter, Mozambique’s forward ‘Tico Tico’ Bucuane posed a challenge for Nigeria.

The Super Eagles are seeking to end their winless streak and secure a positive result against Mozambique in their friendly match at the Estadio Municipal de Albufeira.
