Enyimba, Akwa eye first victory

According to a report from PUNCH Sports Extra, the former champions of the Nigeria Premier Football League, Enyimba of Aba and Akwa United, are seeking their first league victory of the season as they face off at the Enyimba Stadium today (Sunday).

The coach of Akwa United, Fatai Osho, is returning to Aba, where he briefly coached Enyimba in 2020 after the removal of Usman Abdullah. This marks Osho’s first return to Aba as a coach facing Enyimba since leaving the club in 2021. Akwa United, who has yet to secure a win this season, will be under Osho’s guidance.

Enyimba is also aiming to recover from their recent loss in Gombe, and they will have their assistant coach, Yemi Olarenwaju (Yema), leading the team in the absence of coach Finidi George, who is currently on national duties with the Eagles in Portugal.

The upcoming match is expected to be an exciting encounter, with the previous match in Aba between these two teams ending in a goalless draw. Both teams are currently at the bottom of the league table, with Enyimba yet to secure a point, and Akwa United having earned only one point from two games. In their last ten encounters against Akwa United dating back to 2014, Enyimba has won six times and drawn four times.

In his last three games against Enyimba while coaching Rivers United, Osho secured two wins and suffered one defeat.

At the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Sporting Lagos will aim for their second win in three games as they face Doma United, with strong support from their home fans. Sporting Lagos recently earned a hard-fought draw against Akwa United, thanks in part to goalkeeper Nwoke Christian.

Doma United, on the other hand, is looking to build on their 2-0 victory at home against Bayelsa United last weekend.

Bayelsa United hopes to return to winning form as they host Remo Stars at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, while Remo Stars seeks to bounce back from their recent loss to Rivers United.

Tebowei, a representative of Bayelsa United, expressed the team’s determination to secure maximum points in all their home matches this season.

In other fixtures, Abia Warriors will host Kano Pillars, Enugu Rangers will battle Niger Tornadoes, Rivers United will host Kwara United, and Shooting Stars will rely on their home support as they face Gombe United.
