The inaugural MTN CHAMPS, as reported by The PUNCH, is set to feature over 7,000 athletes and 500 schools competing for more than 1,000 medals and 32 school team titles. This championship, sponsored by telecommunications giant MTN, is organized by Making of Champions in collaboration with the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and the Nigeria School Sports Federation.

The competition spans three age categories, including the cadets (U-14), youth (U-17), and juniors (U-20). It will be held in four cities across Nigeria: Benin City, Ibadan, Uyo, and Abuja.

The MTN CHAMPS is scheduled to take place in Benin from October 12 to 14, in Uyo from October 26 to 28, in Ibadan from November 9 to 11, and in Abuja from November 29 to December 1. The grand final will be held in Abuja on December 2.

During a press conference held in Lagos, MTN’s Chief Marketing Officer, Adia Showo, announced that the top 10 athletes from the championship would be welcomed into the MoC Academy. These athletes will benefit from a structured training program that emphasizes the importance of discipline, time management, and life skills.

Showo emphasized MTN’s commitment to Nigeria’s youth and its mission to support their dreams by providing them with a platform and technology to compete globally. She stated, “MTN CHAMPS now joins the group of initiatives; we hope to provide our young athletes with the platform to shine as they learn life’s valuable skills: we hope that this initiative contributes to their overall well-being and success in life.”

Tonobok Okowa, the president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), expressed his gratitude for the MTN CHAMPS and its potential to address the lack of proper competitions for athletes in the U-14 to U-18 age groups. He noted that the competition would motivate athletes in this age range and help retain their interest in the sport.

Bambo Akani, the founder of Making of Champions (MoC), underscored the significance of the MTN CHAMPS in elevating track and field in Nigeria. He praised MTN’s involvement in the initiative and expressed confidence that the championship would discover and nurture athletic talent across the country.
