“Seun Kuti voices his disapproval of Nigerians attempting to ‘cancel’ him following a significant slap incident.”

Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has revealed that his life was on the verge of being ruined due to Nigerian online critics, following his altercation with a police officer. Speaking during an Instagram live session on October 2, 2023, Kuti expressed his desire not to be associated with the ongoing investigation into the sudden death of 27-year-old Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, also known as Mohbad. He conveyed his frustration, emphasizing that he wished to avoid being dragged into matters concerning the police.

Kuti began by saying, “I’m exhausted from constantly seeing my name linked to Sam Larry, Naira Marley, arrests or no arrests, police involvement or not. I’m truly fatigued, and I implore you not to involve me in your issues.”

He went on to criticize Nigerian ‘keyboard warriors,’ blaming them for nearly ruining his career after they agitated for his prosecution for slapping a uniformed policeman in May 2023. Kuti asserted that he was merely defending himself and his family during that incident, but nobody seemed to care.

“That’s how some of you nearly destroyed my life with your unwarranted online attacks. I missed out on five or six major shows this summer simply because I was defending myself and my family. Nigerians wanted to see me ruined, my life destroyed, and nobody paid attention,” he continued, visibly frustrated.

Kuti further pointed out that during that time, he was unfairly portrayed as a problematic figure while the injustices committed by the police were disregarded.

“Suddenly, the Nigeria Police Force became innocent and peaceful, and I was depicted as a madman who left his house looking for trouble with the police. That was the narrative you people created about me,” he added.

The singer had faced legal consequences for assaulting a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge in May 2023, which sparked a significant online discourse. He was arraigned before the Lagos State magistrate’s court and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti, Yaba. Court documents later revealed that he was released on bail after the expiration of the extension of his remand in police custody.
