Joshua told to chase titles not Wilder fight

Former world heavyweight champion, Anthony Joshua, has received a cautionary message from Hall of Fame boxer Barry McGuigan about the prospect of facing Deontay Wilder in the ring.

A showdown between Joshua and Wilder is among the most captivating matchups in the world of boxing.

The two heavyweight fighters appear to have reached an agreement that it’s the right time to square off, especially after both of them lost their titles and can no longer compete in a unification bout.

Speaking to Boxing King Media, former featherweight champion McGuigan expressed relief that the fight had been postponed, considering the danger Wilder poses to Joshua.

“It’s disappointing, but if I were managing Anthony Joshua, I wouldn’t entertain the idea of facing Wilder. Wilder possesses incredible power. While he may have vulnerabilities and has been defeated by Fury, he has the kind of punch that can reach you from the back of the room and knock your head off,” McGuigan explained.

“Why would you take the risk of that? I don’t believe it’s a bad decision to avoid it, especially at this point. If I were Joshua, I would aim to regain a world title, either by fighting Fury or having a rematch with Usyk,” he added.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, on the other hand, informed Boxing Social that his fighter Joshua is still very much focused on the hard-hitting American, Wilder, even though they now face the challenge of finding a new venue for the fight. Hearn is also open to the possibility of Joshua fighting a different opponent in December if the Wilder fight cannot be finalized soon.

Meanwhile, it appears that Wilder may remain inactive until he gets the opportunity to face Joshua. Discussions about a bout with Andy Ruiz Jr have collapsed due to a dispute over earnings for Ruiz.
