Sports Minister John Enoh has announced that the Federal Government is utilizing diplomatic channels to address the recent video posted by Napoli, which mocked Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen.
The video, which has since been removed, depicted Osimhen missing a penalty in a Serie A match, accompanied by a high-pitched voice saying, “gimme penalty, please.” Subsequently, another video compared Osimhen to a coconut, triggering a strong reaction from Roberto Calenda, an Italian politician.
Enoh expressed his disappointment over the video and revealed that he is coordinating with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Ambassador to Italy to handle the situation appropriately. He emphasized the government’s commitment, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, to ensuring that Nigerian athletes, both at home and abroad, receive the respect they deserve and are not subjected to injustice.
Furthermore, Enoh highlighted that the welfare of Nigerian athletes, whether based in Nigeria or internationally, remains a top priority for the ministry. They aim to create an environment that supports their continued success.
Napoli has since issued an apology for the video, stating that it was not intended to mock Osimhen. The incident has raised concerns about the treatment of Nigerian players in European leagues, and Enoh’s decision to pursue diplomatic measures underscores the government’s seriousness in addressing the issue.
