Lekki tollgate!! Mohbad Sympathisers ‘dispersed with teargas’

Protesters and fans of the late Nigerian singer, Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, were reportedly dispersed with teargas at the Lekki Tollgate in Lagos State on Thursday night.

The demonstrators had organized a candlelight procession in honor of the late singer, as announced earlier in the week by the management of Mohbad’s official X account. The procession saw participants dressed in white T-shirts, playing and dancing to the artist’s songs as a final tribute.

However, a video from popular skit maker Oluwadolaz featured a voice claiming, “We have been dispersed with teargas…” Some sources suggested that the tear gas canisters were fired by police officers in the state. A video shared on X through actress Iyabo Ojo’s Instagram live also showed one attendee explaining that they were there to pay their respects to Mohbad and that the police officers were present to secure the event.

Further clarification came from another lady who said, “We were sitting in front of the tollgate. We had a lot of police officers there. So, where the teargas came from, we don’t see it. We just saw the tear gas from the back. No car could move. It was this cab that helped us.”

Meanwhile, a post by popular On-Air Personality, Do2dtun, on his X handle clarified that the event was not a protest but a CANDLELIGHT PROCESSION. He mentioned that the procession had already concluded and that some participants had gathered at the Lekki toll gate separately.

The candlelight procession began at 5 pm, organized by Mohbad’s management, followed by a tribute concert at 8 pm at Muri Okunola Park. Efforts to contact the police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
