“Oluwabamidele Adeeko, also known as Sensational Bamidele, is a renowned gospel musician recognized for leading a band frequently featured at public events attended by the former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike. In an interview with BLESSING ENENAITE, he discusses his career and related topics.
Many may not be aware that you are a gospel musician. What do you think is the reason for this?
The answer is straightforward. Scripture tells us that ‘many are called but few are chosen.’ It also teaches us that ‘as a man thinks about himself, so he is.’ I am who I believe I am, and when God called me, others may not have witnessed it. I only gained recognition later, and they became aware of it. I owe no explanations or apologies; I am what God has ordained me to be.
What inspired your choice to pursue gospel music?
I often say I was born a musician, starting my musical journey at the age of seven. It was then I realized that I carried a special grace. My foundation is deeply rooted in Christ, so I turned to the ‘cross’ that has always borne my burdens. I chose to give praise to God to prevent self-destruction.
You serve as the band leader for the former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike. How does this impact your musical brand?
The Bible tells us that ‘unless the righteous rule, the people will not rejoice, but when the righteous lead, the people rejoice.’ Wike did not assemble my band. I am an independent musician, and it is our musical excellence that allows us to connect with influential figures in society. I am not a flatterer; my praises are reserved solely for God.”
“However, the government under Wike acknowledged my presence in the state. Showing support for their initiatives is my way of expressing gratitude. Nevertheless, it’s important to clarify that the band is not owned by the government but by Sensational Bamidele.
You mentioned that Wike’s government honored you. In what manner did they do so?
When the administration took office, they recognized the efforts I had put into their election campaign. Consequently, they appointed me as a councilor for youth and sports, a position I held for six months.
Don’t you charge fees for performing at rallies, campaigns, and other events for them?
Of course, I do charge fees. There is a fee for my services.
How did your path intersect with Wike’s?
This occurred during his tenure as Chief of Staff to the former Governor, Rotimi Amaechi. Recognizing his potential, we decided to support him, not necessarily because I anticipated becoming a councilor, but perhaps because Amaechi’s government didn’t align with my aspirations.
Do you face criticism for performing at Wike’s rallies?
Every action tends to attract some form of criticism. That’s why it’s crucial to have a vision and to do what you feel compelled to do, rather than seeking to please others.”
“You mentioned a Bible verse about the righteous ruling and people rejoicing. Do you perceive Wike as a righteous individual?
I wouldn’t make a judgment on whether Wike is righteous because I am not in a position to judge anyone. However, it’s been a while since I witnessed a governor work for Rivers State as diligently as Wike did. He may not be entirely righteous or perfect in his actions, but he brought significant development to the state. It’s undeniable that he delivered during his tenure as governor.
There were rumors that you were exclusively contracted to perform for Wike as the Rivers State governor. Is that accurate?
If such a contract existed, I believe I would be wealthier than I am today. However, I pray that God makes it possible, but there was no such contract. Those insinuations were the work of some low-quality bloggers seeking attention.
If you were invited to sing at an event that opposes Wike, would you accept the invitation?
If it comes, it comes, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I have my principles as a believer. I would need a valid reason to be against Wike. I won’t align with anyone just because they offer payment.
Have other political groups approached you to perform for them like you do for Wike?
I have been approached by various political groups and attended their events because I am a musician. Wike is too occupied to handle these matters. I have performed for the Minister of Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, as well as other governors and influential politicians from different parties, including the APC, PDP, and SDP. I can’t turn them down. Some of these events weren’t political campaigns; they included birthdays and other programs. My talent isn’t limited to the PDP; I am a gospel artist and don’t sing secular music.
How much time do you spend practicing before performing at rallies?
I don’t practice at all. I rely on my God-given talent.
You appear to have a unique connection with the former governor and know his preferences. How did you develop this relationship?
As a gifted musician, I pay attention to the atmosphere and adapt to the event’s vibe.
Your songs seem to energize the governor’s supporters. How do you achieve that?
Only Jesus knows the source of that energy. My band essentially performs the same songs as other musicians. However, it’s also intentional on my part. My job is to ensure people have a good time.
Your song, ‘As e dey Pain them, E dey Sweet Us,’ went viral, and Timaya released his own version. Were you consulted before he did that?
Timaya contacted me and sought permission to use the song. I granted him permission because we had an agreement. However, if the terms of the agreement are not met, we will address it at the negotiating table.
Did you begin your career as a secular artist?
In the early stages, we faced some challenges, but when God called me to give Him praise, I obeyed. By His grace, I have never regretted that decision. His blessings have been enduring.
Do you have plans to enter the field of politics?
If the opportunity arises, I would consider it.”
“If you weren’t a musician, what career path do you think you’d have pursued?
I can’t imagine myself doing anything other than music.
What are your academic qualifications?
I completed my studies in Management at Rivers State University.
How significant is the influence of social media on your brand?
Social media can be unpredictable. I recently had an experience, but I’d rather not delve into it. Social media has been quite beneficial, but if we’re not careful, it can also harm our image.
What’s your favorite meal?
I have a fondness for eba with okra soup. However, if I’m in Lagos, I’d opt for eba with efo riro vegetables.”
