Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has expressed his belief that Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen would have been an excellent signing for the Magpies during this season.
Newcastle United currently boasts two established international strikers in Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak. However, Shearer emphasized that having multiple striking options is always beneficial.
While Newcastle had other priorities in the summer transfer window, Shearer noted that one player they were linked with and who still appears to be on their radar is Napoli’s Osimhen.
The 24-year-old forward gained attention as a potential Premier League player due to his impressive goal-scoring record with Napoli last season. He was linked with several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, Manchester United, and Chelsea.
Alan Shearer, a Premier League record holder himself, expressed his desire to see Osimhen join Newcastle United during an episode of The Rest is Football podcast. When asked about the possibility of a marquee signing for the club, Shearer mentioned Osimhen as a player he would have liked to see in a Newcastle shirt.
Shearer acknowledged that the team already has Wilson and Isak but argued that you can never have too many attacking options. The ability to rotate and change the lineup, especially in the forward positions, is a significant asset.
It’s worth noting that Victor Osimhen’s impressive goal-scoring record, including three goals in three games at the start of the current season, has continued to generate interest in him. However, his reported high asking price from Napoli may have deterred potential suitors.
Unless Osimhen signs a new contract with Napoli, his asking price is expected to decrease as his current contract approaches its expiration date.
