Nigerian football stars Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala are thrilled about their nominations for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award in both the men’s and women’s categories, as reported by Punch Sports Extra.

Both players are among the five African contenders for one of the most prestigious awards in the football world, a feat last achieved by George Weah in 1995.

In the men’s category, Osimhen secured his place on the shortlist by scoring 31 goals for Napoli last season, helping the club clinch their first Italian league title in 33 years. He also made history as the first African player to win the Italian Serie A golden boot award, outperforming Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez. Osimhen is also the top scorer in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with seven goals.

On his nomination, Osimhen expressed his gratitude to God and described it as a significant milestone and a childhood dream come true. He acknowledged the support of his family and friends and emphasized that this nomination is just the beginning of his journey to achieve all his dreams.

Oshoala, on the other hand, is the sole female nominee from the continent. She has previously won the Confederation of African Footballer’s African Women’s Player of the Year award five times. Last season, she was Barcelona Femeni’s top scorer with 26 goals in all competitions, helping her team secure both the league title and the Women’s Champions League.

Oshoala expressed her happiness and excitement about the nomination, despite facing challenges towards the end of the season. She sees it as recognition for her hard work over the past year and is eager to continue striving for success.

In addition to her nomination for the Ballon d’Or, Oshoala was also nominated for the prestigious Sócrates Ballon d’Or Award for her humanitarian contributions.
