“The Minister announces that Nigerians can obtain passports within a two-week timeframe.”

The Minister of Interior, Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced on Tuesday that 55,000 out of the 200,000 passport backlog have been cleared, with more expected to be cleared before the two-week deadline given to the Immigration boss. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that Nigerians should not be denied passports, and he expressed confidence that once the backlogs are resolved, passport issuance should take just two weeks. This statement was made during a visit by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, to his office in Abuja.

Dr. Edu also pledged to provide widows of deceased personnel from various security agencies access to soft loans and empower inmates in correctional centers through skills acquisition programs. She highlighted her ministry’s expanded mandate to address the needs of approximately 16 million Nigerians affected by insecurity and displacement, leading to humanitarian crises. The ministry intends to offer support, including soft loans, to widows of NSCDC, correctional officers, immigration officers, and fire service personnel. Additionally, inmates in correctional facilities will benefit from skills acquisition programs. Dr. Edu also mentioned her focus on disaster response in her capacity as the minister responsible for the Federal Fire Service. Furthermore, she intends to activate NSCDC’s role in security intelligence as part of a joint partnership.
