NPFL: Enyimba battle Insurance, Remo, Rivers clash in opener

  • Post category:Sports

Current titleholders Enyimba are set to face off against Federation Cup champions Bendel Insurance in a highly anticipated match on the first match day of the 2023/24 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season. The season is scheduled to commence on September 9th.

The draw for the upcoming season took place in Abuja on Tuesday, revealing several exciting fixtures for the opening weekend. Among these, last season’s runners-up, Remo Stars, will be pitted against the 2022 champions, Rivers United, in Ikenne.

Newcomers Sporting Lagos are slated to make their NPFL debut with a home game against Gombe United. Additionally, Katsina United will square off against Kwara United in Ilorin upon their return to the top tier.

Former four-time champions, Kano Pillars, who are making a comeback from the second tier, will kick off their campaign against Sunshine Stars in Akure. In Ibadan, Shooting Stars will host Plateau United in a repeat of their opening day clash from the previous season. Another newly promoted team, Heartland, will welcome Lobi Stars.

A South-South derby is also on the cards, with Bayelsa United facing Akwa United. Abia Warrior will lock horns with Niger Tornadoes, while Rangers will go up against Doma United, concluding the fixtures for the first match day.

To enhance coverage, the NPFL board has taken a step forward by installing AI cameras in ten venues across the country. Over 300 out of the 380 matches are set to be streamed in the upcoming season, and the NPFL board has asserted that the rights for streaming matches exclusively belong to the broadcast partners, disallowing clubs from individually streaming their matches.

This marks the first full season that the new Nigeria Premier League board will oversee, after having managed the abridged league in an interim capacity during the previous season.
