CAF Club Competitions: Enyimba leads charge as Nigerian clubs begin quest for glory in Africa

  • Post category:Sports

The upcoming weekend will showcase the preliminary round matches of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup, with three Nigerian clubs vying for advancement to the next stage.

Leading the Nigerian charge in the Champions League is Enyimba, a two-time African champion. They will commence their campaign against Libyan side Al-Ahli Benghazi in an away match. Remo Stars, the other Nigerian team in the Champions League, will also begin their journey away from home, facing Medeama FC in Ghana.

In the Confederation Cup, Bendel Insurance will be the sole Nigerian representative in the preliminary round. They will host Algerian team ASO Chlef at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin on Saturday. The other Nigerian team in the competition, Rivers United, has progressed to the next phase.

For the three clubs in action this weekend, the main objective will be to secure victories convincingly to avoid an early exit from the continental competitions.

Enyimba’s Challenge Against Al-Ahli Benghazi
Enyimba will be facing Al-Ahli Benghazi for the first time since their encounter in the 2021 CAF Confederation Cup. The experienced Enyimba side is well aware of the challenges posed by North African teams and needs to maintain focus both on and off the pitch. As reigning Nigerian League champions, they aim to score their first away goal against Al-Ahli Benghazi, who defeated them 1-0 in their last visit.

With several key players departing and new ones joining, Enyimba’s manager Finidi George will rely on fresh talents to maintain their competitive edge.

Remo Stars’ Determination
Remo Stars’ debut continental game against AS FAR of Morocco ended in a 1-1 draw, and this time they are aiming to surpass their previous stage. With Sikiru Alimi’s return and the addition of new players, the team is better equipped for their continental journey. After finishing second behind Enyimba in the Super Six, Remo Stars intend to prove their emerging strength against Ghanaian league champions Medeama FC.

Bendel Insurance vs. ASO Chlef: Similar Paths
Both Bendel Insurance and ASO Chlef secured their continental tickets through similar circumstances. While Bendel Insurance clinched their spot with an FA Cup victory, ASO Chlef won the league cup to earn their first continental appearance in over a decade.

Despite these shared backgrounds, the match between the two teams will determine their next phase. ASO Chlef’s defensive approach and poor away record clash with Bendel Insurance’s lack of goal-scoring prowess. While ASO Chlef tends to focus on defense, Bendel Insurance will need to find a way to breach their opponent’s tactics.

With their return to the continent after a long hiatus, Coach Monday Odigie and his team understand the importance of a strong comeback and will aim to secure a successful run.
