Enugu NSCDC Arrests 40 Suspected Illegal Coal Miners

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has reported the apprehension of over 40 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal coal mining in Enugu State.

During a press briefing in Enugu on Friday, Mr. Muhammed Dada, the State Commandant of NSCDC, disclosed that the arrested suspects were found in possession of various tools and equipment used for illegal coal mining, including pumping machines, diggers, head-pans, shovels, and four unregistered Hanvan G7 trucks. Other items confiscated from them included a Toyota Hilux van, two heavy-duty batteries, a considerable quantity of coal, and a motorcycle.

The operation was carried out on Thursday, August 24, at the base of Ugwuonyeama hill in Enugu, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.

Mr. Dada emphasized the severity of the economic sabotage committed by the suspects and highlighted NSCDC’s role as the primary agency responsible for protecting critical national assets and infrastructure.

He stated, “Based on intelligence received, NSCDC’s team conducted a successful raid which led to the apprehension of the 40 suspects involved in illegal coal mining at Ugwuonyeama.” He further assured that a thorough investigation would take place to ensure those responsible for the illegal activities face appropriate consequences.

Dada issued a stern warning to individuals engaging in unauthorized mining within the state, urging them to cease their activities immediately. He reiterated NSCDC’s commitment to collaborating with law-abiding citizens and encouraged residents to support government initiatives in curbing unlawful activities by providing relevant information for arrests.

He concluded, “Individuals with valid clearance and legitimate mining operation licenses will be treated in accordance with the law. NSCDC remains steadfast in its actions, demonstrating its dedication to safeguarding the nation’s resources and upholding the integrity of its critical assets.”
