Governors from the southeast region, along with the House of Representatives ad hoc committee and various security agencies, convened in Enugu and Abuja to address the escalating insecurity in the southeast.
During their meeting with the Chief of Army Staff, the House of Representatives ad hoc Committee expressed concerns about the rising violent crimes attributed to gunmen and criminal elements associated with IPOB and ESN, which are posing a significant threat to the stability of the South-East region.
Obi Agocha, the committee chair, emphasized that the objective of the interaction was to tackle the security challenges that have cast a shadow over Abia state, particularly crimes such as banditry, assassination, and kidnapping. He recognized that addressing these issues requires a collaborative effort involving all stakeholders and security agencies.
Agocha highlighted that Umunneochi, a community in Abia, serves as a focal point for these challenges due to its proximity to other states in the South-East. He raised concerns about non-state actors, like IPOB and Eastern Security Network, using this area as a base for committing crimes and then retreating to neighboring states.
The Deputy Director of Operations at the Army Headquarters, Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho, represented the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, at the meeting. Esho assured that the Nigerian Army and other security agencies are committed to addressing the insecurity in the region, particularly in Isiukwuato and Umunnochi local government areas of Abia State, which have been severely affected by kidnapping and criminal activities.
Lagbaja noted that while there have been efforts to diminish the threat of kidnapping, more steps will be taken to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore peace to the region.
Assistant Commandant General of NSCDC, Philip Ayuba, also highlighted challenges faced by security agencies in the region, including the proliferation of small arms and the lack of community cooperation in sharing information about criminal activities.
Overall, the meetings aimed to strengthen collaboration among various stakeholders to effectively combat the rising insecurity in the southeast region.
