Nigeria Police Vow To Prosecute Two Officers Dismissed For Misconduct, Robbing Suspect Of Over N1.1Million, Mobile Phones In Kwara

A committee established by the Nigeria Police Force to review the dismissal of two officers, Sergeant Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious, attached to Kwara State Command, has upheld their dismissal. The committee also recommended the prosecution of the dismissed officers for conspiracy, theft, and making false and malicious statements against the Nigeria Police Force.

In June, a video went viral on the internet, featuring the two dismissed police officers, Sergeant Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious, who were attached to the Kwara State Police Command. There was also a media publication about their dismissal.

However, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement on Tuesday to clarify the situation and debunk the officers’ claim that their dismissal was unjust and a result of refusing a bribe to compromise an ongoing investigation.

According to the findings of the Special Investigation Unit, Force Criminal Investigations Department, Abuja, which reviewed their case, Sergeant Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious were assigned to the Public Complaint Bureau, Office of the Public Relations Officer, Kwara State Police Command. Their primary responsibility was to address complaints brought by the public regarding police misconduct.

Unfortunately, during their investigation of a case involving conspiracy and advance fee fraud in February 2020, the officers engaged in misconduct that led to their dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force. During the investigation, they arrested two suspects, and they coerced one of the suspects into withdrawing a significant amount of money from his bank account, which they collected. The suspect was later released on bail, but the withdrawn money and his personal belongings were not returned to him.

Instead of following proper procedures, Sergeant Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious demanded more money from the suspect to close the case, which amounted to further extortion. These actions were a clear violation of their duties and the police code of conduct, and the matter was reported to the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the IGP X-Squad for investigation.

During their trial, verifiable evidence, including the conversion of one of the suspect’s mobile phones for personal use by Corporal Glorious, was presented, leading to their guilt and subsequent dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.

The officers also filed a complaint of wrongful dismissal before the #EndSARS panel in Ilorin, but their dismissal was upheld after a thorough review of the evidence and testimonies from all parties involved.

The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to discipline, accountability, and professionalism within its ranks and condemns any form of misconduct. The dismissal of Sergeant Shola Akano and Corporal Babatunde Glorious demonstrates the force’s dedication to eliminating bad elements and upholding justice and fairness. They will face prosecution in accordance with the committee’s recommendations.
