NITDA to establish cybersecurity lab in 2024

The National Information Technology Development Agency has announced its plans to potentially establish a cybersecurity laboratory in Nigeria by 2024. This information was shared by Mrs Hadiza Umar, the Head of Corporate Affairs and External Relations at NITDA.

During a meeting with Dr Iliyasu Gashinbak and his team from the Chartered Institute of Forensic and Certified Fraud Investigator of Nigeria, Kashifu Inuwa, the Director-General of NITDA, emphasized the importance of collaboration to promote digital forensics, revitalize the tech ecosystem, and combat cybercrimes in the digital realm.

Inuwa expressed concern about the detrimental impact of cybercrime on the nation’s economy, organizations, and individuals, stressing the urgency of building capacity to safeguard against malicious activities. He noted that cybercriminals invest significantly in research, information technology, and powerful tools to execute attacks, making it essential to take proactive measures to counter them.

In addition, Inuwa mentioned that while NITDA has invested in various technologies like the Digital Fabrication Lab (FABLAB 1.0) and other labs across the country, a cybersecurity laboratory has not been established yet. However, the agency has identified a potential location for the cybersecurity laboratory and intends to involve all relevant stakeholders to expedite the design and implementation process of this center.
