“Edo State sees the arrest of 30 individuals suspected of drug dealing by the NDLEA.”

The Edo State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has conducted an operation resulting in the seizure of drugs worth hundreds of thousands of naira and the arrest of 30 suspects allegedly involved in illicit drug dealing at various locations in the state.

Ondotimi Bebetu, the Edo State assistant commander overseeing the agency’s operations, revealed this information during a parade of suspects in Benin City on Wednesday. The seized drugs from the suspects include tramadol, cannabis sativa, and both dried and fresh leaves, among others.

The arrests of the 30 suspects, comprising 15 males and 15 females, were carried out after a two-day raid on hotels, drugs, and drinking joints, as well as hideouts in Ihama and country home roads within the Benin metropolis.

Bebetu stated that this action was in response to the state government’s directive to security agencies to combat drug use, particularly after discovering that the recent cult clash, which resulted in numerous fatalities, was influenced by the consumption of illegal drugs.

He elaborated on the operations, stating, “We conducted raids on establishments where drug dealing activities were taking place, such as hotels where various illicit activities were observed. Prostitution, which has also been causing issues in the state, was allegedly associated with drug use. As part of our investigation, we are looking into both the dealers and users of these substances.”

Bebetu further mentioned that ongoing investigations will determine the appropriate actions for each individual involved. Those found guilty of being dealers will face legal charges, while users will be counseled and guided based on their specific circumstances, whether they are first-time users, using drugs to get high, or consuming them socially.
