Labour Congress, NLC Accuses Tinubu Government Of Treading Path Of Dictatorship, Planning To Rob Poor Nigerians To Feed The Rich

  • Post category:Politics

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed its discontent and threatened to reassess its relationship with the Nigerian government, taking more direct action if necessary. The Chairman of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, issued a statement on Tuesday, criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its unilateral decisions.

Ajaero accused the government of behaving like a dictatorship and abandoning agreements made during discussions with the NLC. He specifically mentioned the proposal to provide N8,000 monthly to 12 million impoverished households for six months as a measure to mitigate the effects of fuel subsidy removal. Ajaero argued that the government had not sought the approval of the Presidential Committee tasked with recommending ways to address the subsidy removal’s impact.

The NLC Chairman further criticized the government’s plan to allocate N70 billion to National Assembly members and N36 billion to Judicial workers, which was not part of the approved relief package. He questioned the government’s priorities, suggesting that the proposal favored public officials over the poor.

Ajaero also expressed doubts about the government’s data on the poorest households and raised concerns about the mechanisms for distributing cash transfers, citing previous instances of questionable allocations.

The NLC emphasized the need for democratic processes and social dialogue, expressing disappointment in the government’s apparent disregard for these principles. Ajaero stated that the government’s actions seemed hurried and lacking transparency, which could undermine its credibility.

The NLC had expected to commence work on the proposed committees, but the government has yet to inaugurate the National Steering Committee, leading to delays and suspicions regarding the government’s intentions.

The NLC declared that it would not participate in committees that are programmed to fail and may not bring real relief to Nigerians. It called for genuine dialogue and cautioned the government against exploiting the situation for personal gain.

In conclusion, the NLC warned the government that if these actions persist, the NLC will review its engagement and potentially take more proactive measures to address the situation.
