Nigerians are pinning their final hopes on President Tinubu’s cabinet.

Once again, a situation reminiscent of Muhammadu Buhari’s first tenure in 2015 is unfolding. President Bola Tinubu, who took office on May 29, 2023, is now in his 56th day in office, but the appointment of his cabinet is still pending. This delay is being keenly felt across the country and has raised concerns among Nigerians.

According to the Fifth Amendment to the Nigerian Constitution, President Tinubu is required to submit the names of his ministerial nominees within 60 days of assuming office, which means he has until July 27, 2023, to meet this deadline. If he fails to do so, it would be a breach of the constitution.

The delay in appointing ministers has left Nigerians anxious, as they hope that the new cabinet members will offer direction and implement policies and projects to alleviate the hardships faced by the populace. The delay in ministerial appointments has coincided with policies that have negatively impacted citizens’ lives, leading to a worsening cost-of-living crisis in the country.

Various stakeholders, including members of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Hotel Owners Forum, emphasize the urgency of early cabinet appointments. They believe that quality ministers with industry experience can positively influence policies, boost investor confidence, and expedite economic recovery.

The complexity of selecting a diverse and competent cabinet in Nigeria is acknowledged, but many are urging President Tinubu to have submitted the nominees’ list earlier to fulfill his promise of hitting the ground running. Concerns have been raised that the delay might result from political pressures, leading to adjustments in the list.

There are worries that failure to meet the 60-day deadline could be a constitutional breach, potentially triggering actions from the National Assembly. As the deadline approaches, Nigerians are anxiously awaiting the announcement of the ministerial nominees and hoping for effective leadership to address the nation’s pressing challenges.
