“Former NBA president calls upon the media, judiciary, and Labor to unite against injustice.”

Olu Akpata, the former president of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), has issued a strong call to action for the Nigeria media, judiciary, and organized labor to speak out against issues that could potentially harm the country.

During a memorial lecture in honor of Anyim Udeh, organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Enugu, Akpata delivered a speech on the theme “Freedom of the press, fake news, and the rule of law.” He urged the media to follow the footsteps of respected journalists like Nnamdi Azikiwe by embracing their responsibilities, particularly in investigative journalism.

Akpata expressed concern about the current state of the economy, judiciary, and other sectors in the country, emphasizing the vital role journalists, lawyers, and organized labor must play to help Nigeria overcome its challenges. He stressed the importance of fostering a positive relationship between lawyers and journalists to facilitate progress in the country.

The former NBA president lamented the spread of fake news facilitated by untrained individuals using smartphones and operating on social media platforms. He highlighted the significance of investigative journalism and the pursuit of truth in the media.

Various dignitaries attended the lecture, including the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Chidiebere Onyia, who represented the Governor. Onyia praised Anyim Ude for being a dedicated statesman who worked tirelessly for the unity and progress of Nigeria.

The Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Patricia Obima, also expressed gratitude to NUJ and Anyim Ude’s family for honoring the late journalist and broadcaster. She pledged ongoing support from Ebonyi State to the family.

In response, Nnana Ude, the eldest son of late Anyim Ude, expressed appreciation to the organizers and journalists from the South East States for honoring his father’s memory. The family also established a yearly N1 million award for the best investigative journalist in the region.
