Terrorists Kill 3 Mourners During Funeral, 24 Others In Benue Communities

Coordinated attacks by bandits in Benue State, North Central Nigeria, have resulted in the deaths of at least 27 individuals. The terrorists targeted Adogo Ugbaam, Zaki Akpuuna I, and Diom communities in Mbaterem, Ukum Local Government Area, between Friday and Saturday. During a burial ceremony on Friday evening, three people were killed in Adogo Ugbaam, while the following morning, 24 locals lost their lives in Zaki Akpuuna I and Diom communities.

According to a local source, armed men arrived on motorcycles in Adogo Ugbaam around 9 pm on Friday, taking the community by surprise. After killing three residents, they also attacked a local market. The bandits later proceeded to Diom and Akpuuna communities at around 11 am on Saturday, when the market was bustling with activity.

Kartyo Tyoumbur, Chairman of Ukum Local Government, confirmed the incident, reporting that the remains of 24 victims had been recovered. He mentioned that after the attacks, the armed gang fled but encountered the military at the Tine-Nune community on the Zaki Biam-Wukari Road, resulting in an exchange of fire. While the exact number of casualties among the bandits is unknown, it is believed that some were neutralized.

The state police command’s spokesperson, Catherine Anene, also confirmed the attack. She stated that a team of police and other security forces repelled the assailants, recovering eight bodies, while others were taken to the hospital for treatment.
