The People’s Democratic Party has condemned the final written address presented by lawyers representing President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), stating that it poses a threat to the judiciary. Wole Olanipekun (SAN), the lead counsel for the President and Vice-President Kashim Shettima, argued in his concluding statement to the PEPC that any interpretation of the constitution that does not acknowledge the Federal Capital Territory as the 37th state could result in chaos and anarchy.
In response, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, expressed concern, asserting that the comments were intended to intimidate the judiciary. In a statement, Ologunagba stated, “It is alarming and disturbing that the APC has made their final written address public, wherein they also issued threats that could disrupt national peace if the Court upholds the clear provisions of Section 134 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) regarding the mandatory and statutory requirements for declaring a candidate as the winner in a Presidential election.”
He further argued that the PDP believes the APC’s intention is to blackmail the court and undermine the independence of the judiciary, hindering its ability to carry out its duties in accordance with the law.
