Nigerian clubs fail to receive financial support from FIFA for World Cup following the Super Eagles’ performance.

Nigerian clubs have missed out on financial benefits from the FIFA World Cup due to the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the Qatar 2022 tournament. FIFA recently announced that it would distribute a share of the revenue generated from the World Cup to clubs that released players for the competition. Unfortunately, no clubs from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) benefited from this largesse as no NPFL players participated in the tournament.

A total of 440 clubs from 51 member associations across all confederations will receive a share of over USD 200 million in FIFA World Cup 2022 benefits through the FIFA Club Benefits Programme (CBP). This program recognizes the role of clubs in player development and their contribution to national teams. The FIFA CBP is part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between FIFA and the European Club Association (ECA) that has been extended until 2030.

Among the 440 clubs receiving funds are various lower-tier teams, including second-tier, third-tier, fourth-tier, and fifth-tier clubs. FIFA will distribute a total of USD 209 million, with a rounded per-player daily amount of USD 10,950, regardless of the minutes played during the tournament.

The funds will be distributed to the clubs based on the players’ registration in the two years leading up to the World Cup, and FIFA will transfer the amounts to the respective member associations to distribute to the affiliated clubs.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed the positive impact of the FIFA Club Benefits Programme on global club football. The ECA also acknowledged the significance of the programme and the increased distribution for the 2026 and 2030 editions of the FIFA World Cup.

Under the new MoU between FIFA and ECA, USD 355 million will be allocated to clubs for the 2026 and 2030 World Cups.
