President Bola Tinubu is set to be announced today as the new chairman of the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS). The announcement was revealed by Bayo Onanuga, a former media aide to the president, in a tweet on Sunday.

Tinubu, who left Nigeria on Saturday, is currently attending the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS in Guinea-Bissau. According to Onanuga’s tweet, the announcement of Tinubu’s chairmanship will take place during the ongoing leadership meeting of ECOWAS.

President Tinubu will be succeeding President Umaro Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, who recently visited Nigeria. The tweet states, “Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will become the new ECOWAS chairman today, succeeding President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau, who became chairman on July 4, 2022, at the 61st summit in Accra. Tinubu’s leadership will be announced in Bissau today at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).”
