The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed disappointment over the lack of results from the 7-day ultimatum it issued to the military junta in Niger Republic, which had overthrown the democratically elected government of President Mahmood Bazoum.

During its initial extraordinary meeting held on August 4th in Abuja, the West African bloc, ECOWAS, issued a 7-day ultimatum to the military junta, demanding the restoration of democratic rule or face consequences.

ECOWAS had attempted to defuse the crisis and find a diplomatic solution by sending envoys to Niger. However, these efforts were met with resistance from the junta, and subsequent negotiations failed.

In his opening statement, Bola Tinubu, ECOWAS Chairman and Nigeria’s President, acknowledged that the ultimatum had not achieved the desired outcome. He stated, “Despite our diligent efforts, including the deployment of various ECOWAS mediation teams, we have not yet achieved the desired result in engaging the military junta for a peaceful resolution.”

Tinubu highlighted that the second extraordinary meeting would provide an opportunity to reevaluate the strategy for restoring the democratically elected government in Niger. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic negotiations and dialogue as essential components of the approach to resolve the crisis.

He further stressed the need to engage all parties involved, including the coup leaders, in meaningful discussions to encourage them to step down from power and reinstate President Bazoum. Tinubu emphasized that exhausting all diplomatic avenues was crucial for a swift return to constitutional governance in Niger.
